Not every appointment requires a visit to our clinic. With virtual rehabilitation (also known as tele-rehabilitation), you can connect one-on-one with your physiotherapist from the comfort of your own home. Over a live video chat on your phone, computer, or tablet, your therapist can assess new injuries or conduct follow up sessions as part of your treatment plan. What is virtual rehab used for? There are a few scenarios where the use of virtual rehabilitation may enhance your physiotherapy care. Accessing physiotherapy services when you cannot easily attend an in-person visit, or if physiotherapy services are not available in your community, then virtual care might be the ideal option for you. Examples of physiotherapy services that can be provided by tele-rehabilitation include: Consultation Patient interview Physical assessment Education and instruction Monitoring progress in a treatment plan Exercise prescription, instruction and demos Frequently asked questions Will my personal information be private and secure? Physiotherapists are required to ensure the privacy and security of your health information at all times. This includes the technology used, as well as the appropriateness of the setting in which the services are delivered. As an example, it is most appropriate for you to attend these online sessions in your home or at a medical facility, rather than a public place. Our physiotherapists use the virtual rehabilitation platform, Physitrack, the global leader in remote patient engagement and mobile exercise prescription. Will I still receive quality care? You should expect to receive the same safe and quality care you would get at an in-person session. Physiotherapists are expected to meet the same standards of practice regardless of how the services are delivered. As there are limitations to the ability to conduct hands-on treatment and assessment, the appropriateness for the use of virtual care is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Fortunately, our physiotherapists use an active approach with a focus on movement, exercise, and education, making them already well suited for virtual rehabilitation. Will my insurance cover virtual rehab? In light of national and provincial physical distancing measures, we continue to see support from industries who view your health as a priority. Most extended health insurance and motor vehicle insurance providers currently approve virtual physiotherapy services at the same rates as our in-person sessions. How are virtual physiotherapy sessions conducted? Virtual physiotherapy assessments are conducted very similar to in-person assessments. Our physiotherapists will guide you through a patient interview to understand the history of your issues and goals, and then conduct a physical assessment based on the interview. Physical assessment may involve patients demonstrating functional abilities so the movements can be analysed. Certain camera angles may be needed for analysis, and your physiotherapist will guide you through this. After completing the assessment, your physiotherapist will create and discuss your proposed treatment plan. Questionnaires relevant to your condition can be administered through our online platform to help ensure your recovery is on the right track. Follow up virtual sessions are useful check-ins to update your physiotherapist on your journey to recovery. Additionally, these sessions are regularly used to provide and adjust your customised home exercise programs, provide instruction and education, and can even address home workstation ergonomics. Due to the nature of tele-rehabilitation sessions, we’ve found that our clients have been thoroughly engaged in the exercise and education components of their treatment plan. We find that being active and engaged in your treatment plan — instead of a passive recipient — is your greatest tool for a quick, effective recovery!
