It involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points of the body, believed to help balance the flow of energy through pathways in your body. These points are places where nerves, muscles and connective tissue can be stimulated and encourage the body to release endorphins, our pain-relieving chemicals. Acupuncture can be used to safely treat a variety of disorders and conditions, including lower back pain, migraines, arthritis, tendonitis, and fibromyalgia. It’s also been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory markers in your body, decreasing pain from inflammation. Our acupuncture therapy is often recommended as part of your overall therapeutic treatment program, or can be booked as a standalone session all its own. Hunt Club Bells Corners How Does Acupuncture Work? The human body is believed to have a series of acupuncture points which can stimulate the central nervous system. The physical stimulation of need insertion into these acupuncture points helps release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. The biochemical changes that result from stimulating the acupuncture points can influence the body's healing abilities to promote a wide variety of pleasant physical and emotional changes. During an acupuncture treatment, a trained therapist or acupuncturist will insert needles at various depths in specific locations of the body - each acupuncture point providing a different effect on the body and mind. The needles will typically stay in for a few minutes, and can also stay in for up to 20 minutes or more. Contact our team of trained therapists to learn more about our acupuncture treatments! Types of Acupuncture Treatments That We Offer Traditional acupuncture Collapse Traditional acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine needles (as fine as a human hair) into points in the body called acupuncture points. In traditional Chinese medicine, these acupuncture points are believed to allow energy, called qi (chee), to flow. Different acupuncture points have different functions, and the needles that are inserted in these points treat specific conditions, rebalance your body’s energy flow, and reduce inflammation and pain. Traditional acupuncture provides best results when performed by a registered acupuncturist (RAc), or fully trained health care providers like physiotherapists and chiropractors. Electro-acupuncture Expand Electro-acupuncture is a modern variation of traditional acupuncture that uses needles connected to a mild electrical current. The current further stimulates the acupuncture points to regulate abnormal signals of your nervous system. It also substitutes for the prolonged hand manoeuvring required in certain situations where additional stimulation is needed. The electro-acupuncture stimulation is constant, whereas hand stimulation will be varied and inconsistent. The small amount of electricity running through the electrodes might cause a slight vibration or soft hum during treatment, but you’ll feel no pain from the current. Electro-acupuncture can be used for many conditions, including: Repetitive use injuries (such as tendinitis) Muscle and joint sprains and strains Performance care treatments Post-surgical rehab Frozen shoulder Plantar fasciitis Back injuries Cupping therapy Expand Cupping therapy is an ancient technique where glass (or plastic) cups are applied to the body with suction. This suction increases local blood flow to help relieve tightness, trigger points, and pain. It’s been shown that injured and painful muscles are affected by decreased blood flow and increased lactate levels, resulting in even more pain. Cupping relaxes tense muscles and reduces stiffness associated with chronic back and neck pain, migraines, rheumatism, and fatigue. Athletes have been known to use cupping therapy to naturally improve performance and reduce stiffness, muscle cramps, joint pains and scar tissue caused by injuries. It also helps increase blood flow and draws oxygenated blood rich in nutrients under your skin to the areas it’s needed. Cupping can last anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes. Bruising can be a normal side effect, which might last up to 5 days. Facial or anti-cellulite cupping treatment Expand Facial cupping treatment increases blood circulation and facilitates lymphatic drainage. As a result, the facial muscles are more relaxed, the tissues receive an increased intake of oxygen and nutrients, and you’ll more easily eliminate toxins and excess water. It’s a very relaxing treatment that reduces swelling, headaches, earaches, jaw pain, facial paralysis, and sinusitis, with the added benefit of reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Anti-cellulite cupping treatment stimulates blood circulation causing the breakdown of cellulite and the elimination of fats and toxins through the lymphatic system. The massage relaxes the connective tissue and the adhesion of the fascia promoting smoother, more healthy-looking skin. Laser acupuncture/needleless acupuncture Expand Some people simply dislike the feeling, however slight, of a needle penetrating their skin. Laser acupuncture is an alternative that allows you to experience the benefits of this amazing healing system without the needles. A cold laser is applied over the same acupuncture/meridian points of traditional needle acupuncture. Laser acupuncture has been shown to be as effective as needle acupuncture, and allows practitioners to treat points they otherwise might not be able to treat, due to patient age, sensitivity, or fear. It’s also virtually side-effect and pain free. NADA protocol Expand The NADA protocol consists of the insertion of small, disposable stainless-steel acupuncture needles into five points on the outer surface of your ear. The points used in the NADA protocol are sympathetic, shen men, kidney, liver, and lung. Typically, patients are cared for in a quiet, comfortable room, giving them an appropriate space to sit quietly and relax. Dozens of studies have documented the effectiveness of the NADA protocol. Among the benefits reported by patients and health care providers are improved retention in drug treatment programs; more optimistic attitudes about detoxification and recovery; reductions in cravings and anxiety; fewer episodes of sleep disturbance; and reduced need for pharmaceuticals. Full body cupping/acupuncture Expand This total body treatment takes the benefits of both cupping and acupuncture and spreads it along your entire body. The combination of treatments helps relax tense muscles, reduce pain, helps relieve chronic pain, migraines, and much more. This full body treatment stimulates blood flow, which helps detoxify through the drainage and cleansing of lymph nodes in your body. Many athletes also use this treatment to relieve muscle tension and aid their performance prior to their sporting event. Full body cupping/acupuncture may also help with colds and flu, anxiety, depression, allergies, fevers, aches, poor circulation and improve sleeping. Get Started With Elysian Wellness Today! Hunt Club Bells Corners Frequently Asked Questions Acupunture FAQs Is acupuncture safe? Acupuncture is not only one of the safest treatment methods available, but it has the least amount of adverse effects. Most patients actually find acupuncture treatments quite relaxing and report little to no discomfort. We only use sterile needles, and dispose of them after use. Our therapists are registered acupuncturists (RAc), who must have 3-4 years of accredited training followed by an extensive internship and an exam. Medical physicians, like chiropractors and physiotherapists, also receive extensive training in how the body works, and are qualified to perform acupuncture safely. Do acupuncture treatments hurt? Generally, acupuncture treatments contain a risk of only minimal discomfort. The needles used are as fine (or finer) than human hair. In most cases, you can't feel the needles being inserted, and may only feel a slight discomfort in areas with high nerve concentration (such as the hand). Electro-acupuncture may involve slightly more discomfort than traditional acupuncture, while laser acupuncture treatments are essentially pain-free. What can I expect during my initial assessment and treatment? Your registered acupuncturist will ask you questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history. Your RAc will then conduct an AcuGraph scan — a digital meridian imaging system used to analyse and document the energetic status of the acupuncture meridians — by touching a probe to acupuncture points on your hands and feet. After your scan is complete, your RAc will sterilise the areas on your body to be treated and begin inserting the sterile needles into the meridian points required to treat your condition. In most cases, the needles remain in place for 10 to 20 minutes while you relax, with the RAc periodically checking on you. Once the treatment is complete, your RAc will remove the needles and will suggest recommendations on your follow-up treatments. Visit our blog to learn more about AcuGraph. What if I don’t want any needles, can I still receive treatment? Absolutely! You can still get treatment using laser acupuncture, magnetic pellets, and cupping therapy. Please be aware that these treatment methods may not be as effective for all conditions, as some conditions respond better to traditional acupuncture. Ask your RAc to see if your condition qualifies for alternative acupuncture methods. Is acupuncture covered by my insurance? Acupuncture is covered by most insurers, but each plan may differ. It’s always best to check with your insurer whether you have coverage for acupuncture performed by a registered acupuncturist prior to booking your appointment. Some insurers only cover acupuncture performed by a medical physician (such as a chiropractic physician) or a physiotherapist. What’s the difference between acupuncture and trigger-point dry needling? Acupuncturists utilise the meridian points (or acupuncture points) to treat conditions. These needles are only inserted at a shallow depth of the skin to treat conditions such as musculoskeletal conditions, psychological conditions, skin conditions, respiratory conditions, Bell’s palsy, insomnia, and much more. Dry needling is used only for musculoskeletal conditions and is usually performed by a physiotherapist or a chiropractic physician to help relieve muscle knots. The needle is slightly larger than in traditional acupuncture and is inserted directly into a trigger point (painful or sensitive area) of injured muscle(s). The needle will either be left in place or the practitioner will employ an in-and-out technique (moving the needles in and out to stimulate the muscle), or a combination of both. Can children or infants receive acupuncture? Acupuncture is completely safe for children and infants. As a matter of fact, since children and infants’ systems are more “fresh” than those of adults, the needles may only need to stay in for a shorter period of time. Can I combine acupuncture with other forms of treatment, like massage therapy or physiotherapy? Definitely. Acupuncture is a great treatment on its own, or in combination with other methods such as physiotherapy, chiropractic therapy, and massage therapy. It may even be used in conjunction with dietetic services to help reduce cravings, improve quality of sleep, and much more. Is acupuncture good for athletes? Acupuncture is great for athletes. It may help endurance and performance by increasing blood flow, relaxing tight muscles, improving fatigue and soreness, as well as ensuring your organ systems are performing optimally. This can have a huge beneficial factor on an athlete (i.e. improved lung function can increase cardiovascular capabilities). Frequently Asked Questions Cupping Therapy FAQs Is cupping therapy safe? Is it safe during pregnancy? Yes, cupping therapy is very safe and has little to no adverse effects. Cupping therapy is also safe during pregnancy, but your therapist will avoid certain areas of your body such as your lower abdomen and lower back. If you’re pregnant, please be sure to inform your therapist. Is cupping therapy painful? Cupping is generally painless. Some patients may feel minor discomfort when cups are first placed on your body due to the suction lightly pulling your skin, but it usually subsides quite quickly. Cupping therapy has a sedating effect on the nervous system, and many patients report finding this form of treatment extremely relaxing. What are those circular marks that appear on the skin after treatment? Are they bruises? Those circular marks that may appear after treatment are called “sha.” It looks like bruising, but doesn’t cause any pain. Sha are an indication that toxins and stagnation are being pulled to the surface of your body, restoring healthy blood flow to the affected areas. Cupping can have an impact up to four inches into your body, causing the tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages and activate the skin. It’s important to note, however, that those circular marks are not bruises. How long do the circular marks last and why are some darker than others? The sha marks are temporary and will fade away on their own. Sometimes it can happen as quickly as a few hours, but some may take as long as 10 days. Remember, they’re not painful and won’t cause you any discomfort. The colour of the sha indicates the level of toxins and blood stagnation in the area. The lighter the colour, the healthier the area. The darker the mark, the more toxins/stagnation are present. Who might benefit from cupping therapy? Anyone can feel the benefits of cupping therapy. It’s a great treatment for anyone suffering pain or injury. It can help stimulate healing by improving blood flow and pushing nutrient-dense and oxygen-rich blood into injured areas. It’s also used by many elite-level athletes to boost their performance by improving blood flow and oxygenation of the muscles. Is cupping covered by my insurer? If you have coverage for a registered acupuncturist, you’re likely covered for cupping therapy, but it’s always best to check with your insurer first. In addition to acupuncturists, it can also be provided by licensed physiotherapists, chiropractors, or massage therapists who have cupping certification. If you have coverage for any of those services, you should be eligible for coverage by your insurer for cupping therapy.
