Tele-Rehabilitation

What is “Tele-Rehab”?

Tele-rehabilitation, also known as virtual care, is the delivery of physiotherapy services from a distance using electronic communication technologies. These online sessions connect you one-on-one with your physiotherapist from the comfort of your own home, over a live video chat on your phone, computer, or tablet. This service can be used to assess new injuries or for follow up sessions as part of your treatment plan.

What is Tele-Rehab Used For?

There are a few scenarios where the use of tele-rehabilitation may enhance your physiotherapy care, such as accessing physiotherapy services when you cannot easily attend an in-person visit, or in cases where physiotherapy services are not available in your community.

Examples of physiotherapy services that can be provided by tele-rehabilitation include, but are not limited to:

  • Consultation
  • Patient interview
  • Physical assessment
  • Education and instruction
  • Monitoring progress in a treatment plan
  • Exercise prescription

Will My Personal Information Be Private and Secure?

Physiotherapists are required to ensure the privacy and security of your health information at all times. This includes the technology used, as well as the appropriateness of the setting in which the services are delivered. As an example, it is most appropriate for you to attend these online sessions in your home or at a medical facility, rather than a public place. Our physiotherapists use the tele-rehabilitation platform “Physitrack” – the global leader in remote patient engagement and mobile exercise prescription.

Will I Still Receive Quality Care?

You should expect to receive the same safe and quality care you would get at an in-person session. Physiotherapists are expected to meet the same Standards of Practice regardless of how the services are delivered.

As there are limitations to the ability to conduct hands-on treatment and assessment, the appropriateness for the use of the service will be assessed on a case by case basis. Fortunately, our physiotherapists utilize an active approach with a focus on movement, exercise, and education, making them already well suited for tele-rehabilitation.

Will My Insurance Cover Tele-Rehab?

In light of national and provincial physical distancing measures, we continue to see support from industries who view your health as a priority. As such, most extended health insurance and motor vehicle insurance providers are currently approving virtual physiotherapy services at the same rates as our in-person sessions.

How Are Virtual Physiotherapy Sessions Conducted?

Virtual physiotherapy assessments are conducted very similar to in-person assessments. Our physiotherapists will guide you through a patient interview to understand the history of your issues and goals, and then conduct a physical assessment based on the interview. Physical assessment may involve patients performing functional abilities so the movements can be analysed. Certain camera angles may be needed for analysis, and your physiotherapist can guide you through this! After completion of the assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss the proposed treatment plan to facilitate your recovery and help you achieve your personal goals. Questionnaires relevant to your condition may be administered through the online platform to help ensure your recovery is on the right track.

Follow up virtual sessions are useful as check-ins or touch points to update your physiotherapist on your journey to recovery. Additionally, these sessions are regularly used to provide, modify, and progress your customized home exercise programs, provide instruction and education, and even address home workstation ergonomics. Due to the nature of tele-rehabilitation sessions, we have found that our clients have been thoroughly engaged in the exercise and education components of their treatment plan. Luckily, these are two of a physiotherapists’ greatest tools in encouraging clients to become more active participants in their treatment plan, as opposed to being passive recipients.
