What Are Custom Orthotics?

Everyone’s feet are different. Some are wide, some have high arches, some individuals have two feet that aren’t the same size or shape. No matter how your feet are, orthotics are a great way to help keep your feet, connecting tissues, and ligaments healthy for life.

Orthotics are specially-made shoe inserts constructed from foam casting that takes an imprint of your foot and creates a pair of custom shoe inserts that are perfectly designed for your feet.

How Do Custom Orthotics Help?

Your feet play an integral role in your day to day life and overall health. Many issues can begin from the feet or can potentially aggravate issues if you have common foot abnormalities such as an over-exaggerated arch, or, what is referred to as, “flat feet.”

Instead of just merely cushioning your feet from the stress, as most over-the-counter orthotics do, customized orthotics are specifically designed to be an effective remedy for common foot conditions and pain. Orthotics are a fantastic treatment option to address various symptoms and injuries.

Some of the goals your therapist may have for orthotic treatment include:

  • Correcting foot deformities
  • Helping the foot or ankle function better
  • Providing support to the ankle
  • Reducing the risks for further injuries

Types of Orthotics for Feet

Orthotics can be customized and made using a variety of different materials. Our Registered Physiotherapist will require a 30-minute assessment in order to determine which type of orthotics is right for you, based on several different factors, and based on the symptoms the patient presents.

Orthotics can range from a rigid material (such as carbon fibre or plastic) to a material that is more flexible or has more cushioning material. There are several different types of orthotics as well, based on what they will be used for, such as if they will be used for sports or general day to day use.

After the assessment, our physiotherapist will discuss which orthotics type is right for the patient and proceed with the foam casting of their feet, which is then sent off to be made.

Does My Insurance Cover Orthotics?

Typically, many insurance companies may cover the cost of custom-made orthotics up to a specified amount. It is important to note that it is the patient’s responsibility to consult with their insurer if this product/service is covered, as it may differ from policy to policy.

**Please note: custom orthotics must be claimed manually by the patient. Direct billing is not available for this service.

Custom Orthotics Process:

  1. A 30-minute assessment is first booked with our registered physiotherapist in order to determine which orthotic is right for you based on condition, use, pain level, and other factors.
  2. Once this is determined, our physiotherapist will complete a foam casting of your feet. The casting is then sent to the lab to create your customized molds. Generally, the process may take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to receive the custom orthotic.

Please note that if orthotics are not purchased after the assessment, the fee for the 30-minute assessment is $75. If orthotics are purchased, this assessment fee is waived.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required upon purchase. The remaining balance must be paid upon delivery. An invoice will be provided for insurance purposes once the order is picked up and paid in full.
